What is Backbone Cabling?
The function of the backbone cabling is to provide interconnection between telecommunication rooms, equipment rooms, main terminal space and entrance facilities. It includes the backbone cables, intermediate and main cross-connects, mechanical terminations, and the patch cords or jumpers used for backbone to backbone cross-connection. It also includes cabling between buildings. In star networks, the backbone cable interconnects switches, hubs, and similar devices, as opposed to cables running between the switch and desktop/station.
What does Attenuation mean?
Attenuation is the loss of signal in a cable segment due to the resistance of the wire plus other electrical factors that cause additional resistance (Impedance and Capacitance for example). A longer cable length, poor connections, bad insulation, a high level of crosstalk, or ambient noise, will all increase the total level of attenuation. The 568A standard specifies the maximum amount of attenuation that is acceptable in a category-5E cable segment. Attenuation is measured in deciBels (dB). In optical fiber, a diminution of the signal as a function of length traveled number of connections in a circuit.
What does Bandwidth mean?
A range of frequencies, usually the difference between the upper and lower limits of the range, expressed in hertz (Hz, cycles per second). The higher the bandwidth, the more information that can be carried. A continuous range starting from zero is said to be "baseband", while a range starting substantially above zero is "broadband". The term "Bandwidth," is used to describe the information-carrying capacity of a medium. In copper and optical fibers, the bandwidth decreases with increasing length. Optical fiber bandwidth is specified in megahertz kilometers (MHz-km). (Source BICSI Telecommunications Dictionary).
What does Broadband mean?
Broadband, A transmission facility having a bandwidth sufficient to carry multiple voice, video or data channels simultaneously. Each channel occupies (is modulated to) a different frequency bandwidth on the transmission medium and is demodulated to its original frequency at the receiving end. Channels are separated by "guardbands" (empty spaces) to ensure that each channel will not interfere with its neighboring channels. This technique is used to provide many CATV channels on one coaxial cable.
